View Full Version : Linework Vanishes when host is modified

So I apply some linework to an existing footing.
A little while later in the project we find the existing wall hosting the existing footing has an existing wall butting into it. This existing wall also has an existing footing.
No problem, I model the wall and the footing, change them to the existing phase and voila .... but wait!
The intersecting linework I applied to my already modeled existing footing has vanished and I'm back to the default.
Is there a way to "lock" the applied linework so this doesn't happen?

Hey Rick,
This is one of those really aggravating things that has not been resolved through seveal releases. I know of no way to "lock" the lines. If you do anything to the object after placing the lines they disappear.
I usually do foundation plans in hidden view rather than wireframe in order to minimize use ofthe linework tool.

Tom,
Thanks for the reply and the empathy. Changing the Model Graphics Style won't help in this case since I've got to apply linework regardless since they are existing footings and we show them differently than existing walls.
I'll add this one to my list of "would like to see fixed" items....

Existing? New? Sounds like Phases would solve your issue.

Aaron, thanks for the reply. If only it were that easy :) . This POST (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=42450) describes the issue I am having with the Phases. If you have any advice on that I'd really like to hear it. I am thinking that I'll end up having to change the way our office prefers to show things to suit the software limitations?

Maybe I'm being picky but the wording used here about the linework implies that additional lines are added to a view when it is used. Lines are not added, just what an object "looks" like is changed.
When the object changes substantially the linework will revert to By Category. Take a roof sketch for example. You can use linework on a roof plan view to alter the lines of the roof and edit the sketch yet the linework will persist. Delete or add a new sketch segment and the linework is either gone or not present because the line segment didn't exist to begin with.
Sooo the moral of the story is since Linework is altering the appearance of an object in a view, changing the object will sometimes force the object to be displayed as originally intended by the category of the object. What we view as a "change" is where the software and the user may disagree.
If this is all elementary and understood then great, just thought it sounded otherwise.

Thanks Steve, that makes sense to me and any elementary wording is great! I just wasn't sure if there was any setting that would maintain the modification by the Linework tool and it sounds like there isn't.
Thanks again for all the replies and information.
