When creating a new roof by footprint (which does not touch or reference anything) in a design option, why would Revit return the error "No element in a secondary option can be referenced by an element outside that option."?

When you get the error dialog, click Expand>>. Then open up the Error 1 node. It will tell you which elements are causing the problem. If it still isn't clear, let us know what the elements are and we can try to figure it out.

Did you used Pick Walls to create your roof ?

When I try to create the roof the Error 1 items are System Data: id 188759, and the roof.

If I highlight System Data: id 188759 and click show, Revit returns the memo "No good view could be found." How do I find out what this is?

At first yes, then I tried line work with the same results.

Add the walls or copy the same walls into the option you are working in. The problem is that you are referencing the walls that are in another option. If you don't add the walls for the roof in the option you want to create your new roof in, then edit the option you would like to create your roof in, then un-check the edit active option only button (I think that what it says), select the walls from the other option, copy and paste them into your new option, you should be able to create your roof and anything else within those new walls with no problem. I just went through this and everything worked out fine here. I'm shooting from the hip here cause I'm getting out of here, but I believe I have it right. Good luck!!

Thanks, but I don't believe thats it. This problem occurs even if I try to create the roof in mid-air without touching or referencing any other geometry.

Is this the only roof for this project you are creating? Maybe you should create the roof in your project then select it to include it in your options.

It's not the only roof. I had no problem creating all of the others for a previous presentation.

Yes I did succeed in creating it in the main model and then cutting and pasting into the design option. Thanks. But I have found that this error message does not occur if I make the roof at level 1 with no offset, as soon as I offset the roof from the level the error occurs.

Sounds like it isn't working the way it should. I suggest reporting the problem to support.

Thanks, I did report the problem to support when you suggested and it seems that they understand it but haven't returned to me with a fix.

Now I need to move on in the project. I receive the same error when I attempt to make a design option primary. If I tell my client that there is still this problem he'll probably tell me to use a pencil or he'll fire me...the scary thing is he would probably be right!

I know about one issue related to room volume computations in secondary design option. Please check if roof could be created when Room Settings dialog has volume computations switched off. I could explain more if you confirm that this indeed is the issue. Thanks.

"Room and Area Settings" dialog box has "Compute room volumes" unchecked on the "Room Calculations" tab. The calculations are set "At system computed height". I haven't changed any of these settings.

I have been informed by support that there are known problems causing these errors which purportedly will be fixed in the next release.
