We are a small engineering group in Idaho Falls, Idaho which by the way is the second largest city in a very large state. That sounds impressive, but what makes Idaho so nice is how peaceful and quiet it is. Idaho Falls (remember, the second largest city in the state) only has a little over 50,000 people. So, needless to say, there isn't a large pool of Revit users around here to draw help from. I went to Autodesk University a couple of years ago, being a big fan of Architectural Desktop but decided I'd look at Revit for the week and see if it had any advantages. I was blown away with how intuitive Revit was and how fun it was to use. I came back to work and told management that we needed to get Revit. They purchased it trusting that I'd be able to make it work for us. Thanks to the Revit Building Forum I was using Revit on the next project I started. The Revit Building Forum group of people were so helpful and understanding of my lack of knowledge, I couldn't have done it without there help. I have become comfortable enough with Revit Building that I was able to start helping others. That felt good to give back to the forum that had helped me so much. I'd been on other forums before, but I had never seen a forum that was as active as the Revit Building forum. I cannot overstate how important an active user Forum is to implementing software.
There are only a couple of us putting the design packages together. I'm using Revit Building 9 and the other guy is doing the mech. / elect. using Autodesk Building Systems. When I heard that Revit was putting out a Building Systems package, I again talked to management and convinced them that we should purchase it. I have been going through the tutorials trying to become familiar with the software. I'm not certain if this (the first release purchase of Building Systems) was as good a choice as the Revit Building was. The software for the first release seems really good, but I hadn't realized that there wouldn't be the support on the new forum that I was use to.
One thing I've noticed on the Revit Systems Forum is the lack of Autodesk personnel involvement. I would think Autodesk would realize that there aren't any experts out here yet and that they would need to be more involved with this new forum till some of us got up to speed and are able to help others.
I am not at all putting down this forum; we need it and we are all new to the software and will need to learn more before we can help each other much. I think it would be good to take some training on this software if there is anyone teaching it yet. If anyone has taken a class on Revit Systems, I’d love to hear about it.
