It seems that a good way to learn about locks is to open files that use them (mostly families).

However, while I can see a lock when I select an object, I'm a bit clueless as to what it represents. In other words: Was the "Align" tool used, then the object locked?; if so, what was the controlling object?; was the dimensioned locked? etc.

Is there any way to get Revit to reveal the meaning and constraints of the lock symbols?

If you use align to lock two or more objects, the lock will show up when you select that object. A temporary ref. plane will show the line along which things are locked.

If you select a dimension, you'll see locks associated with portions of the string. This will constrain the two objects the extension line refers too.

Hey Aaron,
I'm trying to do the door swing family thing from an existing rfa file.
See the two attached jpegs.
When I pick the nested door panel family, there are 3 locks.
When I pick the Swing Arc there is one lock.
How do I know what was used to constrain these objects and then to lock them?

It appears that you can right click a lock and pick "Show Related" which helps...a bit.
Now lets see if I can figure out "how" they were locked together.
