Structures changing insert elevation

So I have convinced myself that this is NOT the program to use for doing record drawings...here is my next issue:

Since I am creating record drawings while construction continues on site I do not have a surface yet. I am trying to show a true representation of what was put in the ground on site. I am creating my pipe networks from a survey file which in itself is very painful but here is my new problem. I am getting new info in all the time and sometimes I have to add a new lateral pipe from a site to a manhole but when I do that I lose all the properties I have previously (and painstakingly) created for that manhole and I have to input the info again. Any thoughts on this one?

Just found out if you draw the pipe to the centre of the structure without actually connecting while drawing then come back and connect it the structure will remain where it was. A bit of a pain in the arse but it will do.
