i need to cut into a topo and have the cut go into the demo layer, and be able to do it at a particular slope. i already created the topo model in Revit from an imported CAD file.

Make the topo Phase Created = Existing. Split the topo surface. Make the cut-out piece Phase Demolished = New Construction.

i click on split surface but from that point i don't understand how to manipulate the countours. which command allows me to actually move a contour at a time which will then allow me to calculate cut and fill

Revit's internal help may be the best help to understand the process. Once you get to the help dialog box, search for "Cut and Fill". One of the first topics should be "Reporting Cut and Fill Volumes on a Site". Read up on that and then do a search on "Graded Region". This part about graded regions will be key. You're going to be adding, deleting, moving, or copying elevation points within the sketch mode of the region.

That's right, I said Parent-Child relationship for all you PTC'ers out there. I have stumbled upon a little curiosity in site modeling. If you have multiple Topo surfaces occupying the same space with their visibility controlled by workset display, any new Building Pad might not know which Topo part to cut.

EX: You have New Topo Scheme A and New Topo Scheme B. These are each unique Graded Regions which are really just modified copies of the (e) Topo Part. The client ultimately chooses the Scheme B, but you want to keep the Scheme A around just in case minds are changed or the client wants to revert to part of that design. Okay so you have the A scheme in a turned off workset and invisible to your working view, invisible to ANY view even. You start making improvements to the topo in Scheme B- like Building Pads for example. The pads and sidewall surfaces surfaces are formed in your view and phase, but the Scheme B Topo Surface remains uncut. You can see the pad below, but the continuous topo surface remains. The Building Pad surface cut only happens to the FIRST topo part from Scheme A, not the Scheme B you are now trying to edit. Really. This seems to be uncontrollable by phase, or workset, or visibility. First topo created gets the building pad, whether it is visible or not.

I should get a gold star for this tip because i have many, many hours invested. Be careful that you do not have multiple instances, or multiple versions of the same topo part. Your Building pads will always "cut" into the part with the lower ID number. I know the Design Options will control which Topo is active, and any new graded regions will only cut topos within their option set. Guess I should have used this instead of just workset visibility controls. hmmm....

thanks for the replies everyone. i have been manipulating the contours and have created a cut and fill schedule. i am however wondering if the best way to manipulate contours is moving and adding points which seems to take a very long time. also, is there a way to create a cut plane for just topography so as not to see the topo below the building without cutting out the building?

Dear Lila;
I am a little unclear as to your question, but realize under Settings>Site Settings you can set the visible topos and the cut plane for the topography, etc. I think this is what you are asking for, otherwise you could play around with the view range in view properties>extents.
Best regards,
