I don't think so. Only what is visible in the view will be exported. Are you sure you are not using the temp. hide isolate at the bottom of the screen?

Layer? There's no layer in Revit! :)
Make sure you are selecting the right view/sheet to export in your settings. You could be exporting another view....happens all the time.

We create special export views that are set for our consultants preferences. We have had trouble with underlays being left on and other issues that cause our consultants to say "Revit must really suck if this is the quality of dwg" So we created special views for each consultant, set the scale detail level and visibility that each wanted and then saved the views into export sets. One button push and the model exports.
We also export the sheets so they can see how each of the views is supposed to go on the sheets.
I create specific "background" views to be used for export. In these views, I can turn off categories I don't want included in the exports. If the categories are too generalized, I can create worksets, which in a way transend categories in that I can add any object to a workset and then turn the workset off.
Revit Logic: A view is only a view. You can have as many "Level 1 Plan"s as you want. Each one of them can have a specific use and a specific view setting. You don't have to have every view on a sheet. So, you can sort of use Revit views like you would use Autocad layer settings or layer scripts.
