Duplicate centroids

I am trying to build a topology and keep running into problems with duplicate centroids. I have attached object data to my polygon centroids. When I try to create a topology I get hundreds of duplicate centroids marked. I need a way to get rid of all of the "dummy" ones that do not have any data attached to them. I have moved the "real"centroids to another layer and these "phantom" ones still show up when I try to make a topology with my linework. Any ideas how to get rid of them? Thanks to everyone who is so patient with a "newby" like me!

I have only had trouble like that when I did not freeze other layers. I am somewhat of a newby also.

Penny, I would begin by running a query to import the data you want to make
that topology out of into a new mapping session, and run drawing clean-up, and
specify Remove Duplicates this should solve the problem.
