This problem does not have a standard solution, so please get your thinking caps on. We're using a ceramic tile system to clad the building, which incurs significant costs for custom sized tiles outside the standard (in this case, 1000x900mm) By using schedules and filters (which display each custom case in a differenent colour) I've come up witha very easy to read sheet that shows where the custom tiles are and how many there are.

Now - the question - how would you create a key for the colours? My first thought was to create a sample bit of curtain walling containing all the panels types and tag them in a view which can be included on the sheet. However, this means that the schedule will have one tile of each type that is not in the actual building!

Because I'm a helpless addict of automagic Revitisation of everything, I'd rather not do it by hand. There must be a way!
Anyway - a challenge for your morning coffee :)

See attached for all the details you probably need.

Don't know if this will get as specific.

Applying a Key to an Element

Select the element that has a predefined key. For example, you might select a room tag in a plan view.
Click Properties.
Under the Instance properties, look for the key name, for example, Room Style.
Click in the Value box for the property and choose a name from the drop-down menu. When you apply the new style, read-only properties appear in the list of instance parameters. These properties are the same ones defined in the reference table.
Applying the Key to a Schedule

Create a schedule for the appropriate element, such as a room schedule. See Schedules and Key Schedules (mk:@MSITStore:C:Program%20FilesAutodesk%20Revit%20Building%209ProgramHelpBuildingENU.CHM::/WS46b90c3cb2c58cad922804fc7fa4315f-7fac.html).

Include in the scheduled fields the key name you created. For example, if you created a key name called Room Style, add this key to the schedule.
In the schedule, select values for the newly added key. For example, if the key is called Room Style, you add values for it by choosing them from the drop-down menus that appear under the key heading. Scheduled fields update automatically with the information you defined in the key schedule. If you edit and modify any values in the key schedule, they will update automatically in the component schedule.

When you apply a key value to a schedule row, you cannot modify any fields defined in the key schedule.
