View Full Version : "Unable to execute tool" on tool palettes

A bunch (almost 50) tool palettes that installed with OOTB AutoCAD 2007 are showing up just fine on my screen, however when I try to use any one of them, I get the message:
Unable to execute tool. Possible causes are:
-The tool is not registered properly. Please check your installation.
- The tool is from another application and is incompatible with the current application
Registered?
I was able to create and name a new tool palette, but I can't put anything on it...I just get the same error message. I know the problem is the first listed, but I don't really know what it means. Can I fix this from inside AutoCAD 2007, or does this require re-installation. And if re-installation is required, what should I tell our IT guy (who did/will do the installation) to check?

Hi
Is everything pure AutoCAD or is a vertical product also being used somewhere in the process ?
Have a good one, Mike

Have your IT guy try running a repair (http://rkmcswain.blogspot.com/2006/05/repair-your-install.html) on your install.
Was another Autodesk product UNinstalled after your 2007 was installed?
If the repair doesn't fix it, you may have to do a "brute force" UNinstall and then do a complete reinstall. See these KB docs.

I had this same error and, after searching the net for a while, managed to fix it.
For me it was as simple as copying the file AcTpTools.atc into the C:\Documents and Settings\<User Profile>\Application Data\Autodesk\AutoCAD LT 2010\R15\enu\Support\RegisteredTools folder. Hope this helps as it can be rather frustrating.

I suspect this might be the answer you are looking for, I have previously posted it here:
It is a very quick check of one setting in options

***-The following is an extreme correction of this issue and should only be attempted by an experienced CAD user and/or Manager. Using these techniques with out backups will irrevocably destroy any customizations NOT in the AutoCAD install. Export your profile and keys BEFORE deleting it, just incase.
I was able to correct this issue by deleting this registy key in ACA 2010.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\AutoCAD\R18.0]
I typically do this on a regular basis to correct local issues. Once you restart AutoCAD it will run through the "First time run" dialog, but as long as the AutoCAD User folder is intact it's a minor thing for the user to correct their modifications.
AutoCAD will load it's default and repopulate the key for you. Then test for the issue again and if the problem persist you can restore the profile and key then your back to square one.
On a more extreme note, you could also backup and delete the AutoCAD User folder found here:
C:\Document and Settings\{username}\AutoCAD\{autocad version}
Delete this folder and the key mentioned above and AutoCAD will start as it is a first start from install.
Good Luck
