View Full Version : Project North/ True North

We have a project half way through schematic design and we just realized that we need to rotate the project north. Currently the true north and project north are the same.
I know there is a way to rotate the true north, but that does not really help as the project is set to true north. I want a way to rotate the project north.
Any suggestions ...
Thanks

Hi There
I have also had this problem in the past and I believe that BeeGee has done a paper on this. There is currently no way to rotate to project north (shame I know). I beleive the workaround is to have true north as project north and vice versa, however, this messes up your north when doing shadows etc.
I have had this exact problem - it is an issue that need to be resolved.

Agreed. Then how do you set your sun studies to project north and not true north ?
Thanks

There is a way to rotate project north but you have to contact Revit support or your reseller.

Can we start a FAQ list of what can be done if you contact support or your reseller?
This is the third item that has surfaced. Its nice to know that a tool like this exists... even if you have to call support.

What are the other two you are referring to? I'll post something when you let me know.

Here's a idea I think that will work,
Rotate the building and site while the view is set to project north and then rotate the true north back to the orginal. Does anyone know of any implications this might have.

You should ALWAYS set up your project as follows:
Draw your building like you want it laid out on your drawing sheets as PROJECT NORTH.
Then go to a view you wish to have as the true north (ie: Site Plan). Set the View to true north. Then use the tool to rotate the project to true north (tools / project position-orientation/ rotate true north). If you follow this technique you will never get into a bind.
If you find yourself in a bind contact Revit support for an unsupported "hack" to rotate your entire project. You would use this to rotate your project to its correct project north (based on your sheet layout) and then use rotate your true north view with the rotate true north tool.
Good Luck.

Never say never. ;) If the building gets repositioned on the site during the design process, the potential for a "bind" rears its ugly head. I've found that the way to handle that is to select everything but the building, and rotate it. Then rotate project north to the new orientation. However, this still messes up some things such as detail components and notes, and you'll need to do some cleanup.

...If the building gets repositioned on the site during the design process, the potential for a "bind" rears its ugly head...This is why even for a "resolved" bldg I use a separate site file and link the building, then share the positioning from the site file to the bldg. This makes a bldg site change a snap... I posted a blog article (http://revitoped.blogspot.com/2006/06/true-elevation-and-position.html) discussing this recently.

Steve
I read your article - very helpful. But I am curious about your earier comment that it is possible to rotate project north but you need to contact your Revit Supplier.
Could you elaborate on this? - is it a variable in the .ini file or something.

Dave
