How do you establish or adjust the "view directions" that are available when placing a Legend component?

Some families can show: Plan/Front/Back

While other familes can show: Plan/Front/Back/Left/Right

I can't believe that nobody knows this!! (taunting...)

Was my question understandable?

Attached are a couple screen shots shown during the insertion of two different "Legend Components". One has more view directions available than the other. Where and how do you determine what directions will be available in the legend?

sorry, no answer here since i don't know enough of the software yet.

i do want to share that i had a similar situation when i wanted to do a ceiling legend showing the different types ive used but my ceiling families only have the option to show it in section and no plans hence i had to abandon the 'visual' legend but had to rely on the ceiling tags and its description in my finish schedule.

im replying to this post so that it gets it's chance to be on the new post list again hoping that somebody will reply and say whether its actually possible to force families to have a plan view (or any default missing view for that matter) in legends.

I believe those are pre-defined, just like each family template has views set-up that you cannot delete. I don't think you have control over them. So for instance a Generic Model family has a plan representation and four elevations, while a plumbing fixture has a plan representation only two elevations One interesting thing is that legends don't have a view range. So for instance if you place a plan view of a G.M. in a legend, the cut plane that slices your component is the same cut plane used in the family (Ref. Level). So if your component isn't showing the way you want it to, you have to edit the family and set a different cut plane inside the ref. level view and load it back in your project.

Thanks for the insight.

Is there somewhere in the family where you can verify what view directions are preset (for educational purposes)?

I don't think you can find out from there....you just have to put a family in the legend and see for yourself. For instance Plumbing fixtures have front/back and plan, generic models have front/back/left/right & plan, etc.

Thought so... but it was worth asking.

Thanks again for the insight.

Tony,

Post the question to the Factory.

Been there, done that..

I try to post all my questions that I can't get answered or things that just don't work right to Autodesk's Support and I encourage everyone else to do that.

I've heard numerous times (from the Autodesk representation) that if you want the factory to know about something or to log something, that you have to log a call with Autodesk Support.

Subscription is mandatory with Revit and email support is included free with this, so lets all take advantage of logging calls.

Here is where you go to access the free email support:

http://pointa.autodesk.com/local/enu/portal/signin.jsp?po=enu

You will need an account, so you'll have to know your subscription number.

Ok - I'm getting off the band wagon...
