A buddy of mine is trying to install C3D 2007 on an athlon 64 system with 1 gig ram and running window 2000. It returns the following error message:

Desktop: Access to specified device, path or file denied

and then kicks him back to the desktop. He is able to install it just fine on a Pentium 4 system. He has checked anything to do with administrative rights and it all looks fine.

Any ideas?

It has nothing to do with Athlon 64 vs. Pentium 4. I have installed Civil-3D on Athlon 64 chips with no problems.

It is highly probably that this is an administrative issue with the computer, and has absolutely nothing to do with hardware or Civil-3D. Has he installed any other Autodesk product on this system?

1) Make SURE they are logged in as an Administrator for their machine.

2) If their hard drive is NTFS formatted, have them check the Security Properties for drive C: - Make sure it's set to "EVERYONE", not a specific user. The problem is that the "Windows Installer" service runs as a "SYSTEM" user. So if "username" is the only user that has full rights to the drive, then "SYSTEM" cannot fully access it.

3) Make sure the TEMP folder is set to a valid folder, then CLEAN it out: In Start > Run, type "%temp%", then press enter. If the folder is not found, then they will need to set their TEMP environment variable to a valid folder. If it IS found, then erase all the files out of it.

4) For more thoughts on that error, search for "ERROR 1321" at http://support.microsoft.com

5) Check to make sure that he's local admin (not inheriting permissions through domain)
