View Full Version : VPN and network drives

When connected to my VPN, I have access to two network drives. Most of the drawings I work on are on these network drives. Obviously these drives are slower to access then local drives. However, when I goto “File”, “Open…” the Open Dialog takes some time to appear. When I am not connected to the VPN, thus the network drives are not connected, the Open Dialog appears in a split second. Another thing is that the AutoCAD Open Dialog takes a lot longer to open then just opening the two network drives within Windows Explorer.

Is AutoCAD scanning each connected drive before deciding to open the Open Dialog? And if it is, is there a way to stop it?

Thanks in advance

This is not much help, but it's been an issue for me in the past...

If you are connected remotely, and you're using VPN, then the delay may just be in the fact that you're accessing your 'host' via a poor internet connection. If you're using a 56k line for instance, then you'll have a tough time doing anything via VPN, however, if you're using a fast connection then the lag may be in the fact that your 'host' (server), is slowing you down by determining who you are, or your PC may be having difficulty connecting through, both as a result of of security policies on the server...

I have heard that firewall settings on both the host and remotes user PCs need to be set up to be almost the same, and if a setting or two are not quite right, then the host will give you trouble.

My knowledge of VPNs, unfortunately, don't really extend much beyond that.As I say, not much help, but maybe some insight...

I would also like to hear from others more informed, as this is something I am wanting to set up with my company.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Actually the VPN connection is reasonably fast. Browsing the network though Windows Explorer provides reasonably good performance. But, though AutoCAD 2007 it is bordering unusable. But even worse, when opening the "open dialog" box and the VPN is connected, it takes an age to appear even if you don't view the network drives.
