A current projct in our office is using a very wide array of structural steel shapes in the framing (for reasons I still cannot figure out). In addition to the standard WF and tube columns, we are also using WFT (T shapes) and Channel shapes as columns. Revit comes with WFT & Channel families for beams, but not columns. Is there an easy way to copy / convert one of the existing beam families to a column family

That may not be possible. You may have to manually remove the existing beam and replace it with a column family.
I hope this helps

We had the same problem (in revit and the office!)
I had to re-model all the beams as columns as columns are extruded vertically and beams extruded horizontally. I saved time by adding all the same parameters and linking the family to a text file for the catalogue of types.
