View Full Version : I miss Grips!

I really miss Grips.
I really like in AutoCAD the ability to pick an object's grip point, and hit the space bar to toggle through six different command options. Better even is just picking the object then right clicking to get to copy, move, rotate, etc.
It is such a waste of time to pick an object in Revit, then having to go to the tool bar at the top of the screen.
Revit 10 - let's add these options to right click.

Consider using the keyboard shortcuts like in the original Autocad - they can be very efficient

I like how a grip changes an arc in ACAD. I've gone to using splines in Revit for electrical connection because they are easier to manipulate than arcs.
Is there and way to get an arc in Revit to stretch like in ACAD?

Yah well I've got Shortcuts AND Grips in AutoCAD.
Speaking of shortcuts, see attached.
Why won't "M" work for move (I did try commenting out "MV") or "D" for Tape Measure?

The one letter shortcuts don't work..you have to use at least two letters (unless it's one of the F1, F2 ,etc. keys).

I believe if you do M and then space it will work...don't hold me accountable if it doesn't :)

Hmm...I am a little confused...unless it has changed in 2007 (I haven't upgraded yet, I have 2006) you have to select the object (either line or wall) and then the grips are visible...so there is still an extra step...
if I want to move or rotate an object I just click and then a keyboard shortcut and move on with the command...
Is this a new 2007 feature?

I just went and tried clicking on the object and right mouse clicking it (or just right mouse clicking) and it gives me a ton of option menus which contain the actual options...For instance to be able to move I need to pull down the menu "Basic Modify Tools" and then find the command...see attached clip..

Use the keyboard shortcuts, its faster in any program. As for copying in Revit just hold down ctrl, click and drag the copy where you want it.

How do you set up custom shortcuts? I am dying for a Tape Measure short cut.
Thanks,

Edit the KeyboardsShortcuts.txt in the C:/Program Files/Revit Building 9/Program folder.

This IS the REVIT forum, right.
What the HECK are you guys commenting on AUTOCAD GRIPS for then.
I MISS AUTOCAD GRIPS IN REVIT was the point. Yah, look at all those nice right click options that I DON'T get in Revit.
By the way, one letter shortcuts do work. At least "C" does for copy, but "M" will not for Move, even with the Enter key..

Relax.... talking about AutoCADs grips I believe is the point because the reasons above articulate all the reasons you miss them to those that might not be aware. AUGI is here to educate, share our experiences, to help others understand... it just so happens its a good place for "wishes" as well. If you intended this to be a "wish" and not a typical discussion item then the Wishlist Forum (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=10) would likely be a better spot for this thread.
I do tend to agree having more dynamic options would be better and is a worthy wish for the program.

Hmm....ok! My showing the autocad right click command was a negative of Autocad, not a positive...when you say that you miss grips because in autocad you can
1. click an object and
2. highlight the grip (by space bar?) and
3. right mouse clicking to get the main menu and then moving the cursor
4. to the submenu (Basic Modify) and then moving the cursor
5. to your command
when in Revit all you need to do instead is
1. just clicking on the object and
2. typing 2 keys...
and to get funky, if you have a chain of an unlimited amount of objects (wall, lines, etc) in revit all you have to do is
1. while highlighting one object press tab then
2. click then
3. type 2 keys
BTW, M and then space, not M and enter...enter does nothing while in graphic mode in revit unless you are entering data, there is no command prompt in revit...also C by itself doesn't do anything unless you type a space bar afterwards...
Peace,

Here's the Shortcut secret:
Move the shortcuts out of the Menu sections and up to the top of the file then they all work.
Oh, I am relaxed. And if you don't appreciate the options in the AutoCAD right click menus then I'm afraid you just "don't get it".
I really do like Revit better than ADT, but the program is short sighted in many ways, and clugy to work with when not creating architectural objects (such as when creating drafting details).

The issue with single letter keyboard shortcuts is if the first letter is also used for other two letter keyboard shortcuts. The fact that two letter KS exist force you to use Space bar or Enter to invoke the command. Watch the Status Bar when you hit the first letter of a KS.
The Right/Left arrow key advance the KS selected if you only select the first letter. Fwiw, you can also create three letter KS. I use it for the View menu > Orient > commands, for example Northeast is "NNE".
Oh, and on the topic...I would be happy to find Copy/Paste options on the Right Click menu as well as Edit Sketch/Finish Sketch. These in particular since there is no keyboard shortcut option for them. Any Options Bar input would be improved with KS options or Right Click menu additions.

It's not about not getting it...I could react the same way towards you wanting grips in Revit....
The fact is that I don't need grips, and I don't need all of those dynamic options in my right mouse click...
I have used Autocad since 1990 before I got into architecture, and since I liberated myself from Autocad back in 2002 (roughly) I have been much more peaceful...and I don't miss anything from Autocad....
It's all about what people get used to, and I got used to how quick I can do things in revit, with no need to have 20 or so main menus, and teens of submenus from the screen....I just go to the toolbar or click on the shortcut...that's all...I find that being quicker and less painful than going through that list....
How often in Autocad do you "set display order to back"? Now you have to go through a couple of menus from a right mouse click to do that...
I was just trying to illustrate to you the quickness in revit to do the same thing you referenced in your opening post...
Revit has "grips" also on walls, lines, etc. when you right mouse click on the "grip" you get some general and some specific commands. If you select multiple connected walls, and click on an intersecting grip, you move it and it moves the vertice...just like autocad grips....
Anyways, when you have specific problems do continue to post here...I only began posting here because I thought you needed help in realizing that the process in Revit isn't long at all...frankly it's my opinion that it is better or the same as in Autocad....but that is just opinion...
Enjoy....

>>How often in Autocad do you "set display order to back"? Now you have to go through a couple of menus from a right mouse click to do that...<<
Well, if I COULD do simple programming in Revit, I'd use the same keyboard macro that I created in AutoCAD - STB:
(defun c:stb (/ ss)
(prompt "\nMacro: Send to Back")
(setq ss (ssget))
(command "draworder" ss "" "b")
(princ)
)
But since any resemblence to an API that is less than VBA or C++ (or Visual C or whatever) is missing in Revit, we are stuck with what we are given.
I'm slowly getting used to working in Revit, but when creating these 2D drafting details, the tools are too limited.
Everyone have a terrific holiday weekend, and thanks for tolerating my rants from time to time.
