I have a horizontal brick accent in a 'dental' pattern that I need to model. Anyone have any ideas on the best way to do this?

haven't played with them myself yet but i think a line based family would be a good start... you could also use an array if you didn't want to get to know the Family Editor better

Search for "Dogtooth Course" for Dentil Pattern

Make it from a "railing".

I am trying to do it as a railing, but I am having a few problems.

So far I have created a new balluster profile to act as my dogtooth course with the correct spacing and it works ok. But I cannot seem to assign a material to the balluster in the railing dialog box. I must be missing something.

I also do not want a top rail, but when I edit the top rail to have no profile I get a warning that basiclly says I cannot do that and that I have to have a railing profile assigned.

We used a line based family for our dental molding... Works fairly well, but its a bit cumbersome. I just set the workplane to the face of the wall and draw the line on it...

It truncates at the end, but you sometimes get a funny message that it cant join them, if they meet at the corners. Hasnt caused any other issues yet, that i know of...

Curious. Need to model. For rendering, condoc elevations, Detail?

I need to model it for an rendering so it has to be 3D geometry.

Guys, do note that the architectural feature in question here is a dentil molding rather than a dental molding. Otherwise we're going to have to start our own forum on modeling orthodontic devices in Revit

I need to model it for an rendering so it has to be 3D geometry.you could try a bump map (does revit even have that capability?). that was always the fastest, easiest way to model details like that in 3ds Max. it will also cut down considerably on your face / poly counts when you go to render - leading to faster render times and smaller file sizes.

Chad, Bump maps do workin Revit's Accurender, but not in the way you're use to in Max. Its really not a solution here.

The question of rendering the brick could be solved if you use the Acme brick map generator (no kidding its a real brick bitmap generator that controls the patterning of the coursing of brick -very nice and even better its free.) This is the reason for my question, I would model the moulding, but use a custom brick bitmap on the wall.

not to completely hijack the thread, but how do they work with revit?in the Material Editor within Revit, when you edit the Accurender material portion, you have the ability to include a bump map. See attached:

Here is a quick line base model that I did for a user group demonstration for how to do dentils or other things of this type. You will have to edit it add a material parameter, etc.
