View Full Version : Shadows from Railings

Just had a surprise after redefining & tweaking a horizontal railing family ~ I found the shadow cast from the railing at normal eye level casts a shadow as if it were a wall (ie solid shadow with all gaps ignored)

Whereas Shadow cast from axonometric view is ok and shows individual shadows for posts & rails as normal

Revit 9.0 (original dvd version)

Any Clues ???

I've see some weird shadow casting in revit (shaded views with shadows on). Especially when you're inside a space....it just seems the algorithms used have some sort of problem. Not aware of any solutions but I've seen discussions about this on these forums before.

The view was external

Had a reply from the factory regarding ramps recently...

Ramps shown in PLAN view don't cast shadows accurately. The workaround was to have a 3D view orientated to plan.

Maybe this is the same for railings.

This hasn't been fixed in 9.1

Hmmm I can't seem to reproduce. See attached (is an elevation view what you're saying as "eye level" or a 3D view?)

This is what I have as a problem

( Please ignore the "architecture" )

That is odd. Your site is casting shadows just fine but the other view isn't. Is that railing built with three horizontal railings? Have you tried to see if using different railings made the problem go away? I'd try leaving the top one only and see what happens, then I'd try changing the sizes etc. to see if I could diagnose the cause.

Original Settings were by date time & place
changing the azimuth had no affect ~ still the same

Also tried a new camera view & altering eye levels etc ~ still the same

Rendered view is OK but job doesn't warrant the time spent to get a decent render

they didnt fix the problem with not being to do solar studies inside a building through curtain walling either - which behaves just like these railings....

There is a "known issues" for 9.1 which may apply here - below

Solar Studies
• Non-rendered, perspective Solar Studies currently may return incorrect results if the camera is located within the shadowed area (this would happen most often with interior views). User should either render the study, or move the camera out of the shadow zone.

(got this from Taylor-tech blog.)
