View Full Version : Assembly Descriptions
We have been using the Assembly Codes to create a field for quick sorting/grouping in door/window schedules. I have noticed that Revit 6.xx door and window families don'r appear to have the Assembly Description line inthe Family Types to automatically insert the descriptor . . . and you cannot insert the missing line because it is a system default :-?
Is this a change generally or just in Oz families? :screwy:
Further question: Anyone know if the Assembly Code (within Revit) a complete version or has it been condensed for Revit. There appears to be some assembly combinations and material or structural system generics missing.
Comment: Rather than only the AIA assembly code system, could the clSFB or other similar coding systems be included as a setup choice (wishlist??) be selected depending on the regional system or country. comments??

I checked all my standard Aus Door families and they all have the Assembly field parameter.
Which ones specifically are you finding are missing it ?
Hi beegee, thanks for the response. None of the families created in 6.XX. Families in V5.xx appear to be fine. The Assembly Code is there but not the Assembly Description.
beegee, thanks for looking at this - much appreciated.

Hmmm, I don't have any 5.0 families to check.
Can you use the "description" field instead ?
beegee - it is an automatic infil from the Assembly number . . . and . . . it is not an issue. Just a little fiddle I used to make life simpler.
I think that someone left it out in the auto format. My queery to AUGI was to determine if it was me and my set up or whether it was an ommission. Sometimes when there is so much to comprehend and when something like this happens, it becomes a clue that something else has been missed or not entered correctly.
If you like - it was a small sanity check by ITA!!
beegee thanks for the effort though - very much appreciated that you took the time.
BTW the Assembly Codes and Descriptions can be useful, but some of the structural and material/composite systems are very different to what we or the Brits or others use. A global or universal system like clSFB might be a useful alternative (as a setup option). What do you think?

you can actually build your own catagory system by editing the file at the top level of your revit install/program directory.
We done a few tests and everyhting seemed to be OK editing this file and the resukts were even exported to ODBC data.

Ian,
you've probably already resolved this query but on checking some of my older window families (v5.1) that I rarely use and my newer familier from 6.0 & 6.1 - all have assembly codes & assembly descriptions.
Hmmm . .. . thanks bladams.
Phil, this looks promising. Which file?
Ita,
'UniformatClassifications.txt' in the program directory.Yes!! I've been asking for this for a longtime. This finally allows us to use CBI or any custom format you desire.
When did this change happen? Why don't they announce these little but useful enhancements?....

ps: anyone worked out what the 4 column refers to? the third is the level in the tree but the 4th I can't work out.
Worked it out, revit category
Guy, thanks for that . . . purrrfect.
I like the AIA classification system, but to tweak it for my purposes destroys its integrity. Perhaps the way to go would be Uniclass!!
Does anyone have any information on the classification details of the Uniclass classification system? There are a number of publications out there eg CAWS (Common arrangement of work sections for building works ) and the RIBA publication on Uniclass - if somebody has these systems on a spreadsheet or a data base or whatever in an "e format" and would be willing to provide a copy, we could cobble a Uniclass system together for thosethat would like it.
I trust this does not violate any copyright. Seeing that it is a universal classifiacation system for the benefit of industry I would doubt it.

RIBA (http://www.ribabookshops.com/Search/IdxCat/2064.asp) sell the electronic manual for 40 Pound + VAT.

What specification system do you use in AUS? With masterspec here they use CBI which I think is based on one of the American systems. Not uniformat though. Uniformat seems to map quite nicely to Revit, CBI not quite so nicely. I've just written a little python script which parses the codes from the cbi.pdf and formats it for revit. The only thing missing is the revit categories.
Here is the codes used by revit (last column) for each revit category
GuyR thanks for the text file and the comments.
Aus does not have an official classification system - the construction and manufacturing industry is too fractured. Anyone using a system uses CiSFB, the RAIA uses CiSFB for its material information sites; Natspec (one of the national specifiers who is in association with Aus Standards) uses Uniclass with its own (slight) variations for local methods and systems. Interesting summary on the Natspec site http://www.natspec.info/Toolbox/AboutCIS/R&D/Classification_Intro.html

Here you go Ian , parsed the natspec.pdf for you and generated a file in the correct format. All you need to do is add the revit categories for each division. Note tabs for the revit categories are required even if you haven't defined a revit category otherwise the the tree won't show up in revit.
MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP THE EXISTING FILE before substituting.

Just for your info the Uniformat is not an automatic system, it has to be assigned in the type parameter by the content creator. Uniformat is a US standard so none of the metric content should have this parameter assigned by default, at least from the factory... Typically web content may have both imperial and metric types included but only the imperial types will have uniformat assigned. I hope this clears up any confusion... :-)
