when you start a new project and save it, your shared parameter file does not go with it.
say for example, a specific job has shared parameters that are not needed for others. would you copy the file and repath the project to the copies parameters?
Also how does the project read the parameters file? If i took a project home with out the shared parameter file would i get an error?

Yes and no.
I try to use one shared parameter file for all projects... This way my families should work across all projects without figuring out which object points to which parameter files.
However - once your family and tag are loaded into the project - the shared parameter file is meaningless. It is simply used to create relationships between objects as they are loaded.

The shared parameter file is merely a library for keeping track of shared parameters, you can have as many files as you want, though Autodesk has tried to make it easier for you to keep and group all parameters within one file. Right now we have seperate files for doors, casework, elevator, projects, simple because of how content development has been taking place. Steve Stafford and his blog, (http://www.revitoped.com/) had a post a while back on how you can ignore all of A-Desk's warnings and manually edit the shared parameter file (do so at your own risk...!). In any case, once the parameters are in families Aaron is right on the ball with saying you don't need the param file anymore. The whole reason for a file, and keeping all params in one file is so that a parameter doesn't get duplicated. A parameter can never be re-created once it is deleted from a file as for shared parameters to work they have to have unique ID numbers. Unless you know the exact ID of a parameter that were to be deleted you can't get it back, except to re-export shared parameters from a family or project template (your one saving grace if you loose the parameter file).
Hope this clearifies things for you, I would try to stick to one file unless you know for sure you won't ever need a parameter again for a project.

great thanks. After playing with it a bit i sort of came to that conclusion, but it is nice to actually have someone tell you that.
