Dimension detail line on plan

I need to draw a detail line and dimension the length on a plan call out. Is there a way to do this directly, or do I have to draw perpendicular lines at the end points & dimension them?

Mouse over the endpoints of the line...Tab until one highlights, click your starting dim point... Same on the other end.
