extruded curved roof

I am looking for a solution to a problem with a roof i have created, its a curved extruded roof, and the problem with it is that the surface pattern will not show. Can this be fixed?

One created with modeling - Create - Roofs and the second one with Roof - Roof by extrusion.
Have you checked your materials for the top of the roof?

Surface patterns are displayed only on planar or cylindrical surfaces.
If the profile of your extruded roof contains a spline, the surface pattern would not be dispayed.

I have checked everything to do with the surface pattern, and its all good there. the way i have done roof by extrusion is by having a elevation dwg file imported into Revit then picking the line if the roof with the pick tool, i have also cut openings into the roof, might this have some impact on the visibility of the surface pattern? i haven't had this problem before with other roofs i have done, so I'm wondering why its happening this time.
