I need to export Revit files to DWG and match client standards at the same time. Is there anyway in Revit to specify whether a door is interior or exterior and have it export to a layer depending on what type it is?

You would need two different door families, with the geometry set to different subcategories. You can then map subcategories to seperate levels.

These subcategories would be defined in the family right?

Yes, you need to define the subcats in the family, so that that geometry in the family can be assigned to the subcats. If you name a subcat exactly the same in every family, for instance "Hardware", and you use it 5 different doro families, in a project the subcat "Hardware" will only show up once. However, if in one family you name it "hardware" then in a project you will have two subcats, "Hardware" & "hardware".
