I was wondering how to edit a light family so that it didnt require that it be hosted in the ceiling. I realize now that this might not be a simple fix since it would need a height parameter added since there is no ceiling to attach to.

I've been trying to solve this, but due to my being a novice with families I couldnt seem to get it to fly.

The fact that the fixture family is hosted is a result of the template used to create it.
There are three light fixture templates in the default library. One for wall hosted, one for ceiling hosted and one that is not hosted. Create your fixture using the unhosted template and you should be able to place your fxture anywhere in your model.
If you have ana existing family you can copy some of the geometry into the new template. You'll probably have to adjust it and add your parameters but it's better than starting from scratch.

Additional light fixture templates are available from the Autodesk Revit Web Libary. Link can be found in the load dialog box for components/families.
