File extension problem

I starting to make a garage file and am going to link it into my main model. The problem I am having is I somehow changed the file extension and it is now a template file. I have tried to change the file extension and that did not work. Could someone explain on how I can make this correct, or look at my file, make the corrections and send it to me. Thanks so much.

could you not just open a new project with the garage file as a template and than save?
