Stairs are odd

The attached file has two stairs that I created in 6.1.

One is supposed to be monolithic (I ticked the box) but doesn't appear to be. And it will not allow me to get smooth finish on the underside of the winders.

The other is a non-monolithic stair, but I can't get a smooth stringer on the inside of the winder.

Are these problems in the way I have made the stairs (using boundary method) or is there something else I've missed.

You can make the stairs monolithic by unchecking 'ends with riser', but I think to make them smooth underneath in this situation you would need to model an inplace family, perhaps linked to the stairs, for control of parametrics, but with the stairs switched off in the view.
