I'm considering purchasing a 19" wide screen monitor for my computer but was wondering if anyone knew how cad would look on it. The resolution on the monitor would be 1400 x 900.
I know on my current monitor, i'm running 1280 x 1024 and my circles still look ovalish but bearable. I wasn't sure how its going to look on 1400 x 900 though.

Thanks in advance

I'm running dual 19" LCD and everything looks fine to me on both of them. They are different models, but same brand (Dell).

Hi "jamesvue1981" ( Sorry, I do not know your real name )

Please note I have *moved* this thread from the AutoCAD 2007 General (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=342) forum to this one, as I feel this particular forum is a more appropriate place for such a topic.

Thanks, Mike

It should look fine. I've used 19" monitors for over 6 years (on a variety of resolutions), I wouldn't go any smaller than that, but it works and functions fine for most professions.....

I run a 19" lcd screen and love it.
I used to have a 21" crt and now I cannot go back even though
it was bigger.

1280*1024 is actually a rather crazy resolution. Standard res like 800*600 or 1024*768 are all in the ratio 4*3 - which is the same ratio as standard monitors. 1280*1024 is a ratio of 5*4, so when you stretch it to fit a 4*3 monitor, it looks wrong. The pixels effectively end up being non-square and squashed, as do your circles.

Lcd screens step around this problem by being exactly the same size as their resolution. You can be garunteed that your cirlces will be perfectly circular on an LCD screen. Just be sure to set you screen size to 1400*900 in Display Properties.

I was recently upgraded to a 24" wide screen. It was described as being 1900X1200, but I cannot seem to get a resolution greater than 1600X1200. My circles are no longer circle. :(

But it is definetely larger than the 19" CRT sitting next to it. ;)

Opie,

Try 1600 x 1024. That is closer to the 1900 x 1200 ratio.

It did not work. It adjusted the bottom and top margins with a black border equal to the difference in resolution. Thanks though. ;)

since we are discussing monitors - i have a somewhat uninformed question. i currently have a dell something-or-other 19" LCD monitor that is excellent (if only i could afford one for home ). we have some extra CRT's sitting around, and im dying for a dual monitor set up. can i mix and match monitors to run a dual rig? i know the vid card (Quatro FX 540) can run dual monitors, just not sure how it works with an LCD and a CRT.

Opie,

Did you use your monitor adjustments to change the vertical size? I assume you are using a CRT monitor.

My graphics card has one DVI port and one VGA port. I originally had the DVI connected to the LCD panel and the VGA to the CRT. I have since swapped the two via a DVI to VGA adaptor that came with the card. I can now use the larger resolution.

Thanks, Jeff, for the help. ;)

I run a 19" LCD (for Outlook and web browsing and such) along with a 22" CRT (for CAD). The work beautifully together.

The only thing you need to remember is a LCD is a fixed maximum resolution whereas a CRT really does not. Set your LCD to it's maximum resolution, and then match your CRT as close as you can. Also set you refresh rate a bit higher on you CRT. 1024x768 should have a refreash rate @ 75hz as an example.

I work on a 24" monitor now..i did have two 19" montiors at the other office i was at..and i loved the duels gave me that workspace one side and toolbars on the other. But this 24" monitor has been different, alot more space even though like another said I cant get the resolution any higher than 1600 x 1024. Otherwise no real complaints.
