surface patterns on existing elements

I would like to have all surface patterns on existing phase elements to show up lighter in new phases, but they seem to retain the material surface pattern colour.

Do i have to create an existing material with a lighter colour to make this work? seem un revit like.

Yes you do. That's what we have to do as well.
