View Full Version : Wraps at Auto Embeded Curtain walls

I read all the old threads I could find on this topic to no avail, so now I'm posting it here to see if anybody can clarify.

I have some curtain wall elements set to auto-embed into walls, and they do. I want the exterior finish (brick in this case) of the host wall to wrap back and form a return at these inserts because the curtain wall is set deep.

Now the odd part: This is working fine in some locations and not in others; even when using the same wall type and a copy of curtain wall. As I said I read and re-read the existing posts about cores and wrapping controls, but I still cannot see how to control this. Does anyone have suggestions for embedding curtain walls inside the project, as opposed to families where you have wall-closure?

Thanks

If you can get this to work automatically please tell me how.

I'm in the middle of a brick building at the moment and the only (practical) solution I can see for this is to create vertical wall sweeps at the curtain wall jamb locations.

The update:

The official word from autodesk is that this is impossible.

I was able to do it, so I don't believe them. However, I've not been able to figure out a predictable way to achieve this, so I'd love to hear if anyone has, or else I will keep trying and post my results.

Autodesk suggests a void object as a workaround.

Not sure how a void object would help you David? The sweep I suggested is predictable (although a bit of a nuisance to do if you have a lot of these locations). Give it a try and see how it works for you

The way I've worked around this problem is to open the family, let's say a window. I use reference planes for everything, so I add a new reference line in plan view some distance outside the existing reference lines that define the opening. I redefine my opening to link it to this wider set of reference planes (usually 2' bigger on either side than the previous opening). I then import the autocad detail if we've got it and use that as a base to snap some Revit lines over, or I just draw from scratch in 2D the condition I need with line weigts to match. Then when I reload, it's fixed.

I have run into this on occassion as well. What I have done is use an opening family and make it the size of your curtain wall opening requirements. Because this is a family, the brick will return if your wall type is set to "wrap at inserts." Instead of imbedding the curtainwall, I just place it in the opening (you will get a wall overlap message). I then set up a series of ref planes (horizontal and vertical) and constrain both my curtain wall and opening to them. This way if I need to modify the opening later, I just modify my ref planes and both adjust accordingly.

FYI Mccurdyks, that works great for windows, but this is not a window family, it's curtain wall embedded into another wall, so there is no family to open, unfortunately. Jcoe has a pretty good solution using voids, although I don't like the clashing walls error. The reveals work pretty well, although they can be a hassle to manage. We ended up grouping the curtain wall and the sweeps to keep track of them all.
