complex wall shapes

Just discovered this today and didnt know it could be done, havent really tried before either - but say you have a complex wall shape that you want windows and doors to be added to - you can do the walls as an in place familiy. For some reason you cant place windows and doors in a plan view but if you go to a 3D view you can put windows and doors into it. Join the goemetry to compound walls and it is fine.

I had to model a complex bay window, I just did the walls as solids in place, and stuck in the windows - it works great.

Have I been missing something really obvious for a long time? has everyone else been doing this or is it something quite obscure?? I would have probably made families and several wall types to do this before.

Last time I had to model an in place family wall, the doors and windows went into it in plan. Seems to me that I had to move them around in elevation to get them where I wanted, tho...
