Has anyone figured out why in Revit 9.1 when a wall touches a column, the column adopts the same make-up as the wall type?

I don't know if this is what you are talking about, but if you edit the column family and go to settings - family category and parameters, uncheck Automatically join geometry to walls, and then load the family back into the project.

You would think that would work, but even after trying that it still is taking the properties of the wall.

are you using arch columns or structural columns?

exactly, just figured that out, need structural columns! That is weird even after changing the props of the (arch) column to not assume the wall props it still seems to....? Well at least now I know what was happening. Thanks for the reply though

This has been the behavior of architectural columns from the beginning, to act like chameleons. It would be nice if there was a way to override that, but I haven't found it.

Actually, it does work when you change the family parameter, but all currently placed columns will not be affected. If you drop in a new arch. column after setting the family parameter it will work like it should.
