Custom line types

Is there a way to have linetypes like:
--GAS--GAS--GAS
or
--WATER--WATER--WATER?

Some people like to co-opt the railing tool, other likes to use the repeating detail tool, either way there are pros & cons, and neither really replaces some sort of tool that would actually let you do it in the first place. If you have the linestyles in CAD, they won't even show up as linked docs, unless you explode the whole dang thing. I feel your pain, we have numerous custom line styles in CAD (we even crossover from AutoCad to Microstation) for Site, Civil, Arch and MEP, and none of them work! :(
