Family type parameter problems?

In creating my family, I am having trouble setting up my parameters. After placing and locking my reference planes to the two objects, I place the dimension and add the parameter. But when I try to edit the distance within that parameter, the constraint error message pops up. know it is possible to edit the distance between two different objects, but I cannot seem to make this work. Any suggestions or comments?

Are you trying to modify the dimension from within the view or from the Properties dialog? You can't modify it from within the view once you parameterize it... though I really wish you could.

I am doing this in the family editor and am only trying to change the parameters from within the "Family Types" window.
