I took over a project using Rev 9. The site plans and site demo plans have a linked AutoCAD site drawing as an "underlay". The site .dwg has a survey.dwg xref-ed into it. At work when I bring up the site plans in Revit, activate the view and do a VP or VG the imported objects show the site.dwg layers and also the the survey.dwg layers within its list. Both the site drawing lines and the survey lines show up in the drawings. I can adjust the visibility of all these acad lines as well as their line wieghts.

This is all good, however when I copy the entire project directory and download it on a free standing machine running Revit outside the network, only the site.dwg shows up, no xref-ed survey.dwg.

On one occasion before I noticed the above, I did some edits to the floor plan using the stand alone machine and moved the Revit file back to the network location. Those changes showed up, but when I went to the site drawings the linked site.dwg and survey.dwg had lost all the VP and VG settings so everything on those drawings showed up. Figuring something was wrong I went back to the stand alone where I noticed the survey.dwg was missing. The site drawing with xref-ed survey drawing are the same on both machines, and as far as I know the Revit settings are all the same. Anyone have an Idea what might be causing this. Thanks for your help.

Is the survey x-refd in the site dwg set with a full path? If so, once you copy the files over, if you're opening them from a standalone machine with no network connection, the survey file will not be found. Make sure the x-ref path is set to a relative path or no path.
