Detail Settings Question

Does the detail setting (Coarse, Medium, Fine) have any bearing on the render quality of a scene?

No, it refers to 2D representation of items, not rendering. Render quality is based on pixel numbers and quality of light all set within the render dialogs, not the view properties dialogs.
