Is there a way to globally modify the layer of a blocks attribute without changing the location of the attribute?

We have a drawing that has over 1000 instances of one block with a single attribute. When the block was created, the attribute was created on layer "0" and the block has been inserted on "sa-mh". In most instances, after the block was inserted the attribute was relocated.

We are trying to change the layer the attribute is on so we can turn it off or on, but this is not so easy. We have tried to explode and redefine the block, REFEDIT, and ATTEDIT. After modifying the block the layer of the attribute is changed on new blocks, but not the existing blocks. If we try ATTSYNC the layer of the attribute is changed, but it is moved back to the default position of the block.

Thanks

Which version are you using? I don't remember which version it started with, but there is a command called BATTMAN. This as several options to edit the properties of attributes.

We are using LDD 2004, and BATTMAN was another command we tried that I forgot to mention. It produced the same results though. Attributes were moved to the default position.

Have you tried the block portion of express tools? Under the "block" menu there's a selection to replace one block with another. If you copy an rename the old block and then edit that block/drawing to correct the layers and then use Express Tools it should replace all instances of the block with the new block. granted the new block would have a different name but it might just solve your problem. If nothing else once you do this edit the original block/drawing and correct the layers and then replace the block you just inserted with the corrected old block.

Thanks Mike!! That did the trick. I used that to change the layer of the block and attribute. I then used REFEDIT to modify the layer that the attribute was on. The attribute is now on a layer other than "0" and is in its modified location, not the default.

I did the same but when I do the ATTEDIT it will only update the current and future insertions of the attributed block. I thought it would update all insertions with changing the location of the attribute. What am I missing?

Try going to the exchange search page http://www.augi.com/exchange/search.asp?page=415
change the "Submission#" box to "equals" and in the "EX" box put in "001256" and that should get you there.
