Structural columns to cut...

Hi all,
I'm trying to cut some structural columns by a void extrusion (same family) but it seems is not possible since I'm able to select the void but not columns...
Any ideas?

Here's a project with a beam show twice; one without a cut and one with.

As you will see, all I did was create an instance void in the beam family that cuts when the dimension parameter is set long enough.
