I have just created a 3D massing model of a new building we are proposing for a client. I have already assigned floor area faces to the masses, and I now want to create an area plan to verify that the model meets the required program for the project. But when I create an area plan and insert a tag, I get an error that the space is not enclosed. So do area plans only work when you have walls in a model? If that is the case how can I get areas in a massing model?

When you start an area plan, it looks for walls. A dialog box pops up saying "Automatically create area boundary lines associated with external walls"
To overcome this, select area boundary, then the pencil and trace the floor boundary and it should work.

If all you need is gross areas your other option is to create floors from the floor area faces and then schedule the floors. By creating and assigning different floor types you can set up different departments or uses if you need more of a breakdown.
