View Full Version : Door Family Naming Conventions

We are working on naming conventions for our door families/types.
We are leaning towards something more "coded" to describe the door and frame (material, glazing, etc.) to streamline scheduling (i.e. most of the parameters would automatically be filled out).
What are others doing?
How many are using “instance” parameters for the door size – so the size does not have to be part of the family/type name?
Thanks,

Well,
I a relatively new Revit user, so take comments with a (very large) grain of salt.
I am using size as an Instance Parameter for my doors (shared parameters so they can be scheduled) because we don't usually differentiate on the sizes beyond the doors schedule so it seems pointless to have it as a type parameter. We're also shooting for a self-scheduling door schedule based on the model. However, remember that such a level of detail is somewhat excessive at the early points of a project and it is also good to have a nice general door family for that situation.
Best of luck!

All our family types (walls or otherwise) are named in the same very simple method:
"The thing"("The thing's dimensions in mm")
ie for a door:
Panel(820x40x2040)
An underscore separates the different components that you need to describe in a family:
Panel(820x40x2040)_Frame(40)
Works for anything (model or annotation families)
Tree(6000)
Spa(800x1700x500)_6 Jets_White
Cubicle(900x1800)
Arial(2.5)
