im thinking about getting a mouse with more buttons, but im not sure whats worthwhile anymore. id like lots of buttons i can program to useful things in CAD, wireless - and a charge station so i dont have to replace batteries all the time. trackball or mouse would be fine.
thanks

I use the Logitech Cordless Optical Trackman at _ork
and the Microsoft Trackball Explorer 1.0 at home.
I'm a trackball guy.
I just spec'd Logitech MX1000's for three guys here.
and the MX Revolution looks cool, but is new.
There are a lot of mice on the market, but if it isn't a Logitech or MS I usually don't even look at them.

FWIW --- I use a Logitech MX500 at the office and a M$ Comfort Optical 3000 when I'm not docked.. I much prefer the M$ one....

I usually prefer the Logitech over M$ but mostly because the wheel on the M$ ones don't click into place & messes with my zooming.

I initially had trouble with that also, but then realized that you sort of have to click the wheel down & towards you (towards the back of the mouse) at the same time. Took a while to get used to...
The scrolling action of the wheel on the M$ one is s__m__o__o__t__h ......

I had an MX1000 for about a year or so but about a month ago it started acting erratically. Phoned up Logitech and they're sending me out an MX Revolution as a replacement. The MX1000 was a really comfortable mouse to use as well.

I've always used Logitech, now using a Logitech Click Plus.
6 buttons and the wheel also clicks left & right which ortho pans left and right in Acad.

I would go with logitech because they always have good products.
Other than the buttons, be sure to get a mouse that fits comfortably
in your hand. Everyone is different and you can always go to your local
computer store to check them out.

You can?????? Really? Just to see which one fits you better? You mean this mouse could be causing my carpal tunnel problems, too & I could have found one that "fits" me at a store? I did not know that, but computers scare me, so why would I go into a whole store of them?
I do know that I have a logitech on my computer at home - a new cordless one (cordless keyboard, too! I love it!), & a microsoft one here. I have issues with the button screwing up my zooming, too. Would it be worth my while to try to obtain a logitech one here, then? It sounds like some of you prefer them.........

I like the shape of the m$ cordless mouse, & I would buy it if I liked the wheel. The wheel doesn't click, so my zooms shift in the middle of commands. The tilt on the wheel is too soft, too. Makes for some strange panning.

So it's really 50/50 - & is based more on my preference & ease. Huh........well, I guess I will just have to venture into one of those stores & see what I've been missing out on! Y'all really did open my eyes! I'm not a very technical person (like y'all couldn't tell), so I really, honestly, didn't realize you could "try them on for size". Cool!
Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Used a Logitech MX1000 Laser, worked good but started to mess up, plus if you forget to charge it overnight, you're stuck with a corded mouse for the time being until it charges. I switched to the Logitech G7 cause you get two batteries that you can change on the fly and not worry about a dead battery, but sometimes I go to switch the battery and I cannot get the mouse to turn on again, that's when I pull out the old MX1000 Laser. The G7 has a few less buttons to program but aside from the power problem, works really well. The MX1000 seem to have more height to it and the G7 is a bit flatter on your hand but you get used to it.

Just got my MX Revolution and I must say it is a comfortable mouse to use, and I've got hands a bit on the large side. The only thing about it is the scroll wheel that sits where your thumb would normally rest. It's actually starting to annoy me a bit but I suppose I'll get used to it after a while.
The battery life seems to be fairly good going on what the software tells me. I've fully charged it and it says there's 15 days left in the battery. If thats 15 days at 24 hours each, recharging this thing won't have to happen too often.

If you have Carpal Tunnel problems I would seriously recommend getting a pen tablet especially now they have come down to about £20.
A few years ago I was at a point of needing to give up CAD and retrain in something else due to the pain. I tried tracker balls ( they just made my thumb hurt as well), physyo, osteopathy, even nerve therapy but nothing worked. Saw a pen tablet going cheep and thought what have I got to loose. It took about 2 weeks to fully get used to it and now there is know pain at all. The only draw back is needing to get a keyboard with a built in wheel.

I keep a small ball at my desk that I roll around to relieve the stress from my hands from time to time. It works really well. Does that make me weird?

So after all of this discussion...... Sould I possibly look into a logitec mouse? I have problems where the wheel will zoom in and out and then all of a sudden it will only scroll up and down. The only way I have been able to fix this is to reboot. And I can't do that all day long.

Thanks for the info. I will try and get IT to give me permission to update the driver. As far as cleaning.... it is optical. Maybe it just needs a vacation.... I know I do. :)

It also may help to go into the CAD options & turn off the scroll bars on the screen. That fixed it on my machine.

JMBUTTONPAN, and set it to 0, but the you lose the zoom and pan functions... Also your center(middle) button should be set to middle button in the mouse software.

If you really want MBUTTONPANning and osnaps both I can help you, but it takes adding an accelerator to your cui and mapping the mouse to the accelerator.
Here is a CUI that is an OSNAPS pull-down menu (you can turn a snap on/off by selecting it in the menu) the accelerator CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+O to activate the POP0 menu.
Go into your mouse properties and select which button you want to pan with and set that to MIDDLE BUTTON, select the button you want to POP with and set that to the keystokes CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+O.
Done.
(Now you realize I just made that too easy. And this hasn't been built into cad why?)
