I can't seem to be able to tag the membrane layers by material. Should I try harder or it is just not possible? Thanks.

Hi -
have you looked at "Keynoting" materials?

I've been avoiding keynoting as I do not understand the word, but I guess I'll have take a look. Thanks.

The help file actually walks you through keynoting and it's capabilities pretty well, so check that out. I'm sure you'll find it useful.

Yeah - i know where you're coming from - it took me ages to get the idea
(i come from a structural background and had never heard of keynoting) but
once you get the idea you'd never go back.
Keynoting is basically a system of keeping a database of all your notes that
you can automatically apply to objects. You can add whatever notes of your own to the existing keynotes file OR make your own up entirely, and keep adding to it as you need.
The beauty is that once you keynote an object within a project, you can quickly and easily "note" it again in any view with 100% consistency as it is contained within the objects properties.
Anyway - i don't know if my explanation is 100% accurate - but i hope it gives you a bit more of an idea!!

i dont know that you would be able to tag it because it does not have a thickness and does not show up. so far from what i can see is that the membrane layer is only to use for scheduling.

Thanks for the explanation Adam. Sounds good. Justin has a point, membrane have no thickness but to be honest, I expected them to show up as a line, that I could tag, change appearance of it, etc.. So, what do I have to do to show my membrane layers in section, use detail lines?

that is what i do. since the membranes have to lap over other and onto flashing etc. it is not really beneficial to have it part of the wall anyways. you would spend just as much time hidding lines then it would take you to draft them in.

Justin is right, with no thickness the keynote by material isn't going to help. We decided to do user keynotes. User keynotes let you put in a keynote that isn't attached to anything, and just pick with keynote you want there. Working this way at least ensures that the note numbers and legends or the text is kept standardized across our set. Not a perfect solution, but better than dumb text.

We place membrane layers as Substrate with a thickness of 1/8" or .0006" depending on the thickness of the layer we want. You can tag those. The .0006 vapor barrier is hard but it will tag

I know this is an old thread, but I don't get this line and could use a little help with keynotes "User keynotes let you put in a keynote that isn't attached to anything, and just pick with keynote you want there."
We use User keynotes and pick the free end option on the Option bar, but the keynotes are still "attached" to an object. We can't place a User keynote without picking a revit object. Once we've picked an object to place a keynote we can move the free end of the note, but if the original object moves then the keynote moves with it. If the object is deleted then the keynote goes away.
This is killing us in some of our details. Someone will add a detail component. From that component they'll create a User keynote. Then they move the end of the arrow to the item they really want to keynote (maybe it's a membrane layer, or a detail line, etc). Now five keynotes are associated to that one detail component and if it moves, or gets deleted the keynoetes shift or disappear.
Is there anyway to use the keynote database and have a tag not linked to an object type?
Or, is there a keynote tag that will tag detail lines?
Element, Material and User are great, but how do we keynote a line?
Thanks for your help.

Hi,
you cannot keynote a detail line.
You could make up a text style or make an annotation family to mimic the keynote style you are using (for example) as a workaround, but that only would end up providing your many users with same opportunity for inconsistencies which is a good enough reason to limit keynoting to (actual) families and not lines.
Its probably easier to track down problems as well when its restricted to families - system or otherwise.
cheers
