Is there a way to have a ceiling which when cut in section has depth?

Mine all seem to be just lines and I don't see a way to add a thickness.

Thanks

Make sure you pick the 'Compound Ceiling' in the pull down options

Basic ceilings are a pure face and the compound ceilings are just like the wall interface where you can have various construction layers

What is the pretended use for a Basic ceiling? Normally in a building that is not using gypsumboard with metal posts, you would either plaster ir with cement and mortar, or put some stucco o paint on it. Any of these have some thickness to them.

Gypsum board or reticular ceiliing is clear they are Composite types in Revit, but what of basic ceiling?

The Basic ceiling gives you a ceiling surface without thickness that can be used to host ceiling-hosted objects. Think, for instance, of a light fixture you want to attach to a floor, but your light fixture is a ceiling-hosted family. What's happening now is that a lot of people are creating light fixture families that are face-based, and so can be hosted by any type of face. I think early on in Revit's development the authors did not think about this.
