I wish to back up my user materials that I have spent a lot of time creating.
I have never done this and cannot seem to locate the folder that Revit puts these in!

In Revit, look in Settings/Options/ & then click the file location tabs. It'll tell you there.

I have wondered about this too - for example would I take the materials home, do I just need to copy everything in the folders that are listed, does revit automatically take all the maps with the materials, no matter where I have loaded them from. Or do I need to make sure I copy those too

Oops! right!
Please let me add to my question!!
Is there a way to open the revit.mlib file for editing? Such as renaming created materials for better organization!?

Aaaaaahhhh!!!!!
Did I do something wrong?
I was backing up what I thought was "user materials that I've created"
located under: program files/Autodesk Revit 6.1/Data/Materials/revit.mlib
Now I install the latest build.
Put the backed up revit.mlib in the data/materials folder
Where's my materials!!!!!!
If I indeed made a mistake I am guessing I was suppose to back up the revit.PAT file instead!!!!
HELP!!

Les, a .mlb file is a Accurender Material Library. A .pat file is a Surface Pattern library.
When you say 'materials', do you mean Rendering materials or Revit Project Materials?

you needed to back up a file called user.mlib
This is where user modified patterns are stored.

I assume that when installing upgrades, that this file is not overwritten? I am not sure whether I deleted this file or it was overwritten when I installed the latest build.

i use to change some materials in they native library...
but that was a problem to move the library between machines
so i actually use a empty library i find some were..(don't remember were)
and just change every thing there wich is a simple file to backup
