I know I can use a revit view visibility filter by family or type, but it appears that it is not possible in a schedule filter.
Any suggestions on how to do this?

One method:

You can add a project parameter, tied to the family's category that you'd like to filter, give it a unique value on those family types you want to filter in or out, and then set up the filter in the schedule based on that parameter.

As mentioned on one of the excellent Autodesk University broadcasts, open the component family you don't want to see, copy it off, and delete the geometry. Reload it into the project and it will still schedule, but won't be visible, and can be easily replaced by the family with geometry if needed.

I think this is one way of doing what you need?

I came across this one today,
Unbelievable, I can't filter a schedule by a family name / Type unless I add a parameter to do so.

Why is that?

Using schedule keys are the fast way to do this. People really should be using them anyway.

It seems to me that family name or type would be a logical criteria to use in limiting a schedule. We have all these "carefully" named families in our projects, but if we want to make a list of, say, all the desks, we have to use some other parameter. We can't just make a schedule filtered for all of the "Desk" families. Has anyone heard a compelling argument why Revit is set up this way? I'm just curious because, IMHO, it makes a lot more work for us. :)

Its amazing that nearly 5 years later we still can't do this...

Wow, I had forgotten that I posted this! And we aren't the only ones who struggle with it - see the longer (also old) thread on the topic here: http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?82743-Schedules-Filter-by-Family-and-or-Type (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?82743-Schedules-Filter-by-Family-and-or-Typehttp://).

Seriously! Get this fixed. Such an irritation! I don't know how this persists from versions to version. It is soooo basic.

You can use CTC's tools to create one. I there's several other out there that are also available.

Try using the Type Mark parameter, already built in, instead of creating a new parameter. You'll need to populate it however, so it's still a workaround. I found that if it's a category for which you don't use Type Mark for annotations, Revit will allow multiple types to use the same Type Mark (but it will give you a warning), which might simplify filtering
