View Full Version : ADA door clear space
I don't know if this is a dumb or impossible idea, but I want to create a door family which will display the ADA clear space in front of my doors. But since there are so many different requirements based on different configurations, I need to be able to cycle through the different clear space requirements by clicking a button or something so that I can pick the one that will be appropriate for that door.
Is that possible?
And I want to be able to create a north arrow that will automatically orient to project north so I don't have to rotate the thing for every sheet.
Is that possible?
Or am I dreaming about things that Revit can't do?
I also need help getting a sheet title list to work right - dividing it up into disciplines and such - I have searched for a thread on this topic and have come up empty, probably because I don't know how to work these forum thingies. I've never messed around with them before.
Can you tell I'm new at this.
Thanks for any help you might be albe to give.

Lafe,
1. you can draw any "Symbolic" lines you want in the door family. Place each different configuration on a different object style. Create a series of yes/no parameters to control each of them individually. Then under the properties use the grey box on the right side to assign the parameter to the visibility control.
I use family types to control visibility like this because it is too easy for a user to leave more than one type on.
I know this smacks of layer control ala ACAD but it will work well if you use the famliy types to control it.
2. AFAIK North arrows cannot point north automatically.
3. To add disciplines to a sheet list add the field to the schedule and fill it out. You can then set the schedule to group by discipline to get a staggered schedule.

In answer to your first question you can do as cphubb suggests and then setup integers parameters to assign a number to each option. When you change the integer to say 1, 2, 3 the visibilities of the various ADA clearances should change. If you want a further explanation let me know as it is a little involved, but rewarding when completed. This would also avoid problems of people accidently having more than one option visible, as this way it is impossible to have more than one show at a time.

This all seems a bit complicated. We have a family of doors where these clearances are parametric. You can set these up case by case. If you need you can turn these ADA clearances off by using view properties.

In one door family, you could have several types for different clearances. I picture having 12" CLR 36" x 84", 18" CLR 36" x 84", and 24" CLR 36" x 84". By placing one door, and then changing the type, you could quickly have any configuration you wanted.

Right, you could leave all of the parameters as instance but that could cause more confusion to a user who was not familier with the system. If each type is clearly named and has a good preview then it would be easy for a user to pick the right one. If they get the wrong type or it changes pick the door, change its type and your done.
Another advantage to this system is it will schedule. Maybe building dept's would like to see that all doors have the proper accessibilty clearances.
Thank you very much for your help - it works like a charm. Much easier than when I used AutoCAD in preliminary design on a building last year.
I appreciate all your helpful comments.
I haven't tried the drawing list thing yet - hopefully it will work as well as the ADA thing.
