View Full Version : What's the best way to treat an attic?

I'm test-driving Revit by modelling a home I recently bought - this is single-stiry with some high ceiling space, the rest being attic (beams rafters and joists, no trusses).

What's the best way to create the attic? As a second level? - I tried that way and seemed to run into some problems (still can't get complex roofs to join correctly) or as one level with some walls attached to the roof, others not? (guess I'll have to edit the profiles individually where they are a bit of both.)

Comments, suggestions??

can you post the roof join problems? we should be able to figure them out! Is the attic really a 'space' with walls, or is more of just a crawl-space type attic where you store the Christmas decorations?

Yeah...it really comes down to whether or not you need to schedule the space as rooms or if it is just space.

Here are some images - the areas that show up in gray on page 1 are the additions the one I am having most trouble with is the one at back right on page 1 - it will not join - shown highlighted on page 2 - on page 3 you can see where part should run under the adjacent overhang but doesn't. On page 4 you can see where the eaves don't quite line up - looks like a fraction of an inch vertical offset. That's probably why it won't join - I had some trouble getting the roof over the front door to align vertically - eyeballed it in the end.

Editing the main roof sketch would seem to be the most logical way to make it happen but that does not seem to allow for places where overhangs overlap other roof areas.

I also need to add a triangular clerestorey in the gable end on page 1 - not sure where/how to start with that...

Page 5 shows a section - the "crawl space" is about 8'-0" high in the middle - GREAT for storing stuff and especially nice here in California where we don't have basements.

Gotta go - quick addition - Somewhere in the future - after I win the lottery, I want to add some dormer windows and turn the attic space into a new master bedroom/bathroom suite.

I hope this helps. Attached here is the roof i've done.

I did the main roof as one roof then create a roof by extrusion for the part which is under the over hang of the main roof.

Thank you but I can't open your file - I have Revit 6.0 (Company has frozen all software upgrades during a cash crunch)

Revit upgrades are 'free' in that they are part of your subscription!
