View Full Version : Weird Material Problem

Hi all,
I am having a problem with the proper display of materials. In the attached image below, I have a rectangular column that has a precast concrete material attached. Its cut pattern is sand, its object style is by category, there is absolutely nothing telling it to display the diagonal hatch pattern shown. If I delete the column and put in a new one, it does the same thing. I've checked the phasing to see if that is the problem...nope. And when I copy the column into a new project, it comes in as it should, after giving me a dialog box showing what changes it makes. The thing is, I have checked each of these settings in the original project where I am having the issue and nothing indicates to me that the pattern is anything other than what I want it to be, yet it will not display properly. Any help would be appreciated, as I'm beginning to get frustrated.

Thank you!

Is this a structural column or a column? It looks like it is a column and joining with the adjacent wall. this would make it pickup the hatching of the wall. To prevent that - either use a structural column or disjoin the column from the wall.

Another possibility is that you are using a column at a coarse level of detail. This will then display the Coarse Scale Fill Pattern, rather than the material pattern. This is a type property of the column.

I believe you may have hit the nail on the head. When I load the column into the project and place it non-adjacent to a wall, it displays properly. When I put it next to the walls, it takes on the wall materials. So...

Never mind, figured out what I needed to.
Thank you for the pointers!

1. How do I load up a structural column? When I go to the columns option, load family, I go to the structural folder, pick what I think are structural columns, drop them in and they still do this.
2. How do I disjoin the column from the wall as suggested?

Thank you for the suggestions to investigate. I am slightly less frustrated now.
1. Strutural columns are in the folder ...\\Structural\Columns. All the columns that area in the ...\\Columns folder are architectural columns - or a better term for them would have been pilasters.

2. Select the Unjoin Geometry tool which looks like an overlapping green and white square.

Also, I found an option in the family category and parameters (of the column) to change the column so that it does not automatically join to walls. You are right, the terms should be revised a bit so that we aren't thrown off.

Again, thank you!

But you can use them in the middle of the room, where they wouldn't be pilasters. A better solution, in my book, would be for them to only pick up wall materials when the material is actually the same, and/or to have an option to not pick up the material in the wall, no matter what.
