I have received a drawing with blocks that seem to have no name.
I only picked this up because the colour in not set to BYLAYER.:banghead:
If you list them it gives Block Name: "*U430". Try and find the block in the insert or refedit command and it doesn't exist. Is there a way to rename them?
Many thanks
Richard

I thought (could be wrong) that these blocks were created by Acad as you work for example using the drag and drop creates temporary blocks. A purge should get rid of them.

These blocks are nested reference objects / points that AutoCAD creates ... they cannot be selected or inserted as regular blocks because they aren't .... they are part of another larger block that was inserted earlier and moified ..... kinda like bread crumbs the system leaves behind ....
my suggestion is to purge them from the system as they serve no real purpose and generally just clog your system down and make it a larger file .... once you do that, go into your purge screen again and go into "objects you cannot delete". If there are still some of those there, then you have to figure out what they are (cuz they are probably in model or paper space) and rename them and then purge the remainders .......
I have a post which explains in greater detail what these reference points mean .... I'm gonna have to go look now .....

Thanks for your comments (both)
I have Purged and -Purged, overkilled but to no avail.
Probably best to post a copy of the block. When copy pasted it has a different name?
maybe exploding them will be the only answer but especially th one shown is used many times.

They don't reference at all in the purge functions.
I think they would have been nested entities either in xref or block form.
Could they have been produced in AEC or (dare I say it) microstation.

This link has all the info I've stumbled upon for nested blocks .....
as for your problem ... I seem to be unable to even go into the block editor to modify it ..... the easiest solution i can think of ...... explode and re-create the block .... and then purge that Z* or U* block ....

oh! I've never used Microstation so I have no idea how that would affect nested or wild card objects in CAD .......

when I explode the *U9 block and re-create it, I am now able to modify the block .... additionally, I can then purge the ghost block from the drawing altogether ....

Okay, this is just something I noticed, when you double click on the block the refedit dialogue opens, if you click on the settings tab you will notice that 'Create unique layer, style, and block names' is ticked, if you untick this and then copy and paste the block doesn't get given a new name.
As I said its just something I noticed so probably doesn't help you much.
Cheers,
Steve

Thanks Rico
I shall start exploding!

I hope you don't have too many to do that to .... otherwise it seems like an awful lot of work .....

Yeah, like wise if you delete the *U9 geometry it can then be purged, but it just doesn't seem to appear anywhere else. I'm at a loss really other than exploding and re-referencing.
Cheers
