View Full Version : How do I find phantom Rooms?
I’ve produced a room schedule so I can add my finishes to it.
However, there are 2 rooms that have room names (one is just called ‘Room’ and the other has the same name as another room).
In the AREA and PERIMETER columns they are noted as ‘Not Tagged’, so I cannot use this to help me track down where they are.
Is there anyway to trace back from the schedule where these 2 “rooms” are?

I just delete them from the schedule then see if I have a missing roomtag.
Or you can turn on color fills, then delete and look for white spaces.

Try opening the Room Schedule and floor plan at the same time and tile them so you can see both. Change the name of the phantom rooms and then look at the plan. If you have multiple levels, then you can add Level to the schedule to help isolate the offending room.

Most likely phantoms. Try deleting them from the schedule & see what happens.
Right, in order:-
Scott: I put on the Colour fill, all spaces look OK. The 2 phantom rooms had colours assigned to them in the legend, but I couldn’t see them anywhere on the plans. ( I looked at all plans, including Roof, and site)
Allen: I’ve changed the names and couldn’t see any of the renamed rooms on the plans. I’ve given the rooms really loooooooooooonnnnnnnnnng names, to see if the text spills out from behind somewhere. No joy.
Andrew: Yup, deleted the rooms from the schedule as you suggested, and lo, the un-named room re-appears at the top of the schedule.
As I mentioned in my original post, the Area and Perimeter columns report ‘Not Tagged’. Unfortunately the Level column also reports ‘Not Tagged’ so I don’t even know on what level these room are.

Maybe try this:
Save the drawing.
Go through each view, select all, filter out, & delete all room #'s. Check the schedule after each deletion.
Once you see that room # dissapear, at least you'll know what view / level it's on.
Then either back up or close with no save & reopen the project, & search around that view.
If after deleting all the room #'s, the tag is still in the schedule, go down in the families section of the browser, find the room tag, & use the select all instances feature.
Once again, you can always back up or close & reopen the project to get to the original state.

Doesn't highlighting the room in the schedule, hightlight the tag in red in a view? Most likely, its a tag you had at one time, and deleted. You should just be able to delete it from the schedule, but you say its re-appearing??

I thought it did too. But I can't get them to highlight anymore. Maybe this was lost in 6.1 or latest build?

If they are not tagged then they don't exist in the model and you can just delete them from the schedule no harm. Revit lets you "program" your rooms ahead of time. So lets say you have a program, you create a room schedule or area schedule then can create the room name and any associated info you want, then when placing the room tag there is a pull down which lets you select from these pre-defined rooms.

If room schedule lists some rooms as 'Not Tagged' it means that that these rooms have no associated tags in any view. You can simply delete these rooms in schedule.
One usually gets into the situation with untagged rooms by first placing a tag and then deleting it. When user places a tag Revit checks if a space enclosed by walls is already associated with some room (possibly because tags are placed in other views). If no room element is found then placing room tag creates both tag element and room element. However when user deletes a tag Revit does not automatically deletes associated room. Thus if all tags associated with a room are deleted then room is left without a tag and marked 'Not Tagged' in schedule.
Upon deletion of the last associated tag Revit usually warnings that Room is left tag-less and user may delete such rooms either from schedules or from Review Warnings dialog.
You may ask why would not Revit automatically delete a room when its last tag is deleted. The reason it does not do it is to support the scenario when user wants to work by first creating a program (and define rooms even before designing spaces for them) and delay placing room tags until later. By the way - did you notice that while placing room tag option bar provides an ability to associate it with untagged rooms?

Hi Steve,
Highlighting the tag in the schedule doesn’t highlight the room tag in plan unfortunately.
And just to confirm, deleting it from the schedule just places it again in the schedule as a no-name space, it does have a room number but Level, Area and Perimeter all noted as 'Not Tagged'

Andrew,
Selecting all, filtering as suggested and deleting all tags brings up the usual warning about Rooms having no tags. Requesting Revit to SHOW me the error it says that searching through all the closed views may take a long time, but I go for it anyway. After a few moments it reports that ‘No good view could be found’!
This might suggest that the room tag just simply doesn’t exist (maybe? But I really don’t know), but it keeps appearing in my room schedule.
In your 2nd suggestion, I selected all instances of Room Tag in the browser. As I have only 3 rooms in the basement (1 actual room and 2 corridors) and as the schedule makes reference to TWO basement rooms, I’ve done a thorough search of this level, and still cannot find the errant room tag.

Wow Damian,
Sounds like that file might need a trip over to Support for an exorcism.
One thing we didn't discuss. You think the phantom could be in a phase other than what any of your views are set at??
Right Guys,
Firstly I think apologies are in order to all of you who said “just delete the roomtag in the schedule”.
Well, I though that is what I was doing. Highlighting the room tag in the schedule and hitting the delete key.
I now know that I should have hightlighted the room tag and there, in the Options Toolbar, a command appears that allows me to either add (nope) or delete (yes Yes YES) a row.
Thanks to all of you who jumped in to help, and apologies for being so ignorant to your repeated pleas to delete.
