View Full Version : Walls, finishes, material takeoff workflow

Hi all,

We have a project of a building that uses several wall types.
The problem is that we have a lot of finishes (e.g. a brick wall + natural stone). That natural stone can be of many different types.

OPTIONS:

1. We need that layer of natural stone to be geometrically there. But if I create a wall for each material finish I end up with a HUGE quantity of walls ā€“ quite difficult to manage. However, this solution offers a correct material takeoff.

2. The other option is to have a wall type (brick + natural stone) and paint the different types of stone. But then the problem is that the material takeoff goes wrong.

So, what do the gurus recommend in a situation like this? Iā€™m not sure which workflow to choose.

Thanks a lot.

If the wall base is fairly consistent, I would consider separating the veneer (stone or brick finish) from the wall. Then I would make walls for just the veneers - one for each type. You can then build all the basic walls to define the building and then build the veneer walls in place adjacent to the base walls (or with a 1" space or whatever). This way you have complete control over the shape and location of the veneer walls with 'edit profile' etc. Then JOIN the veneer walls to the base walls so that they act together and doors and windows work correctly. When you do a schedule everything will list correctly.
When in doubt, build it in Revit like you would build it in the field.

Good luck

I second Jeff's approach. That is the way we always work with veneers.

OK.!

I'll follow the recommended workflow.
Thanks.
